Meet Your Instructor

Hi, I’m Dr. Arelia Johnson — also known as The Identity Professor. I created Language Matters by Arelia Johnson™ and the R.E.D.I. Lexicon because I got tired of watching institutions water down justice with safe language. I built this course for people like us — the ones doing equity work in hostile environments, where every word is scrutinized, politicized, or erased. I’ve spent over two decades working at the intersection of policy, education, culture, and liberation. As the first Chief Officer of Human and Civil Rights for Harris County, Texas, I know what it means to lead through backlash and still speak with clarity and courage. My background? I hold a Ph.D. in Sociology and Criminology from Howard University with a focus on gender and sexuality. I’ve taught, facilitated, organized, and challenged systems across the country. I’m also the author of Thick: The Ideal of Beauty, The Social Construction of Perfection, and Their Impacts on Women. I’m not here to teach you how to survive injustice quietly. I’m here to teach you how to name it, confront it, and lead anyway.
